  • If you want an eBook Reader as well as a tablet computer (e.g. iPad), but can’t really afford both of them and want one gadget that will ‘partly’ do the job of both, the Nook Color is your savior! It will function as an ebook reader (just like all other tablet computers out there) and it will let you do basic internet based functions with its enhanced web browser.
  • Color LCD screen – not necessary a benefit as LCD screens are not the best type for prolonged reading. More on that below
  • Nook email
  • Larger memory – It also has a 8GB internal memory (vs the 2GB memory of the Nook Touch) and a 32GB external memory.
  • Social networking – FaceBook, Twitter etc.
  • Adobe Flash player for watching videos
  • Preloaded games, crossword puzzles and Pandora internet radio
  • The Nook Color eReader also supports Microsoft Word; Excel; and PowerPoint.
  • Also rated as the best ebook reader for kids due to the rich features such as Alive Touch, Read to Me and Read and Play

The above features of the Nook Color will certainly look attractive compared to those of the Nook Touch. However, you should realize that the Nook Color is neither a specialized eBook Reader nor a specialized tablet computer.

If you want a Nook and you want it to be a dedicated eBook reader, the brand new 6 inch Nook Touch released this summer is what you want. It doesn’t have the tablet like functions of the Nook Color, however it has several advantages over the Nook Color.

  • E-ink screen is easy on your eyes – studies have shown that reading on backlit LCD screens such as the one found on the Nook Color and Apple iPad for long hours can have a tiring effect on your eyes. In contrast, the real paper like E-ink screens do not have that tiring effect on the eyes.
  • New touch-screen – The other main benefit is that the Nook Touch has a touch-screen which you can use for flipping pages, highlighting text, browsing for books etc. etc.
  • Cheaper price – The price of the Nook Touch at $139 is also more attractive than that of the Nook Color ($249).
  • Free Wi-Fi – You also get free Wi-Fi at all AT&T hotspots with the Nook Touch eReader. A definite benefit in the Nook Touch vs Nook Color ebook reader comparison
  • Longer battery life – up to 2 months on a single charge compared to 8 hours on the Nook Color
  • Lighter weight – A mere 7.5 ounces (~200 grams) vs 15.8 ounces (almost 1 pound) of the Nook Color

The most obvious point in the above comparison of ebook readers is the ability of the Nook Color ebook reader to double as a tablet computer. If you already have a tablet or do not need one, you may want to get yourself a Nook Touch (if you have already decided that it’s better than the Amazon Kindle 3); however if you want two birds from one stone, the Nook Color may be the right ebook for you!
